Newborns take their time getting accustomed to the new world that they see around them. After they are reasonably acclimated to the new environment, they outgrow their clothes sooner than parents can ever imagine.

They are no longer in the safe environment of a mother’s womb where everything happens on its own and automatically. Bottle-feeding and passing urine and stool are new concepts for the baby, and it can take extreme patience to live through the sleepless nights that vomiting and dirty linen can cause.

Ask a mother and you will get to know what life is like with spitting up, inducing burps and later toilet training. There is always loads of laundry full of baby clothing and bedding that need to be washed everyday. And therefore there is a need to stock them adequately.

A mother needs to have patience, love and loads of clothing, burp cloths, and diapers. Another item that is needed in larger quantities that you would probably not foresee is receiving blankets. You will realize that you need a receiving blanket on several occasions:

• Initially for swaddling the baby when you put him to sleep in the crib
• On occasions, you will want to swaddle the baby and cuddle
• Immediately after you dry the baby following a bath
• In milder climatic conditions, just to cover the baby
• On outings when you have to take the baby along

Many toddlers grow up using a receiving blanket as a security object when their mother is not around. A receiving blanket is actually a multipurpose item of bedding as well as one of daily use. The natural conclusion is that you would require more than one, maybe half a dozen, so that you always have a spare one when you take the baby out on special occasions even if a couple are in the wash.
