Toddler Sleep Sacks

The need for safety is as important for toddlers as for infants. As babies grow up, they become more aware of the environment around them. While asleep, they tend to replay some of the activities they experience during the day, resulting in increased arm and leg movements while asleep. This can, sometimes, result in re-breathing if a loose blanket is unknowingly moved over the head. Blankets and top sheets, if necessary, should be tucked in the mattress and extend only up to the baby’s chest.

The idea of using a sleepsack to avoid such mishaps has actually been borrowed from Europe and the UK where it is used extensively. A sleepsack can be used to keep your toddler warm without the use of blankets, which are anyway not recommended unless used strictly according to the safety guidelines.

A toddler sleepsack should be of a good fit to ensure that he cannot slip out it. A good fit relates more to the size of the chest rather than the length. Most of the small size sleepsacks available today are meant for babies with a body weight of at least 12 lbs. A medium size would fit a toddler of up to 30 lbs in weight and a large is appropriate for weights beyond that.

The climate in your region should be the deciding factor for the type of sleepsack you buy for toddlers. The emphasis should be on providing optimum warmth –overheating should also be avoided at all counts. The right selection will help in avoiding extra blankets. Look for a separate sleepsack for the summer and winter. You may need more if the climate in your region varies between extremes during the year. You also have the choice of adjusting the level of clothing the baby is wearing under the sleepsack. You can always switch accordingly between a short-sleeved and a full-sleeved body suit underneath the sleepsack.

Sleepsacks ensure that the air around the baby is clean and fresh. The use of a sleepsack means that you do not need blankets or top sheets that can potentially block fresh flow of air if they cover the head by mistake.
