Sleepsacks for Safety and Comfort

For babies and adults alike, a sleepsack is a convenient alternative to a blanket. A sleepsack is a blanket that you can wear. If you are traveling or are required to stay over at places with questionable hygiene of the bedding, you will definitely need one for a comfortable sleep. The same is true if you are expecting or already have a newborn in the family. Sleepsacks are one of the recommended nursery accessories that the government also recommends.

Sudden and unexplained infant deaths have reached alarming proportions. Many SIDS deaths can be prevented by following the guidelines provided by government and accredited private institutions. Just like prenatal care necessitates that mothers stay away from smoking, drugs and stick to a nutritional diet during pregnancy, selection of safe nursery accessories is a significant postnatal preventive measure. Sleepsacks for babies come in various designs, styles, shapes and materials. While selecting one for your baby, your main focus should be on the following aspects:

  • Safety
  • Comfort
  • Warmth
  • Breathable fabric
  • Price

Whereas sleepsacks made of silk or wool may be a better choice for adults, safety should be your first concern when it comes to babies. Both cotton and wool can be produced and manufactured organically and can help protect your baby from the harmful effects of synthetic fabrics. A sleepsack made of long staple cotton is not only soft on the baby’s tender skin but also lightweight. For colder climates, you can choose one that is filled with cotton batting and quilted.

Wool is equally good as a natural fiber. It is warm and a sleepsack made from higher counts of wool can be as soft as cotton flannel. Washing a wool sleepsack can be a bit problematic as frequent home washes are not recommended. The price and the visits to the dry cleaners may prove to be a bit of an extra expense.

Babies tend to move their legs and arms during sleep. Any accidental wrapping of the blanket or a sheet around the neck and mouth may block off oxygen or entangle the baby. A sleepsack is not only a protection against such potential risks but also provides a comfortable environment for your baby’s much needed sleep.
