Crib sheets usually come in sizes that fit the standard mattress sizes. If you have a different size that has been customized, you may have to look for a store that will agree to sell you a customized crib sheet to match the dimensions of your crib mattress. You can also opt for making one at home. Making a crib sheet is easy, and it can also save you some money. You will need fabric and 1 3/8 yards of ¼” wide elastic.

  • Select a fabric of your choice. If you want to provide your baby with a safe environment, look for pure, untreated organic cotton.
  • Measure the mattress and its depth to arrive at the required yardage. Your cut length should be equal to length of the mattress plus double the mattress depth and add 8 inches.
  • The same formula applies for arriving at the width of the crib sheet.
  •  Cut out an 8” square on each corner of the rectangular cut length.
  • Sew the corners to make a box. Join the two cut edges at each corner, stitch in a 1/2" seam. Use a long whip stitch or overhand stitch the overlying edges to prevent raveling the raw edges; press to one side and topstitch.
  • Press less than 3/8" around entire lower edge. Open out pressed hem.
  • Cut the elastic in to four 12” lengths.
  • Tack the elastic ends on the width side of the fabric.
  • Pin center point of a 12" piece of elastic to the corner seam. Stretch each end as much as possible and tack.
  • Turn the hem over from back to the inside. Zigzag the hem all around. Use a long stitch for durability, stretching the elastic to fit.

The elastic will ensure that your sheet will not come loose even if it looses some of its elasticity.
