Baby Safety with a Secure-Fit Crib Sheet

It would appear that buying a crib and crib bedding is simple, and all that you have to do is to go out, choose the color and the design that you want and the shopping is done. Actually buying crib sheets for the baby is not as easy as it seems. Among other things, two aspects that you need to consider are the safety factor and the fact that babies outgrow cribs in two years or less.

Cribs are mostly rectangular in shape, but if the nursery is big enough a round crib can look grand and allow for circular movement of the baby when he is lying down. Buying bedding for a round crib will require a little more effort. Crib beddings are usually available in sets that include sheets, a bumper, quilt and stayput fitted crib sheets. Buying single items means that you need to mix and match the colors and designs on your own.

A word about baby safety will not be out of place here. The latest guidelines from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) specifically mention that loose adult or larger than required sheets should be avoided for cribs. The hazards of loose sheets is great enough for the CPSC to insist upon a warning label on stayput fitted crib sheets requesting for prevention of entanglement and suffocation caused by loose sheets.

Always ensure that the sheet fits snugly over the mattress so that it does not come loose when the baby moves. The best way to do this is to buy one that can be tucked under the mattress securely. Sheets that come with Velcro that secures the sheet perfectly are even better.

Further still, parents are advised to avoid putting any loose bedding like a pillow, blankets or comforters in the crib. Use a wearable blanket instead. If a blanket must be used, then use a thin blanket and tuck it around the mattress in a way that it reaches only up to the chest of the baby. Stuffed toys are another potential hazard that can cause suffocation. Do not expect hotels and motels to provide you with all the facilities required for baby safety. While traveling, take a portable crib and sheets that fit it. Besides these precautions, always ensure that you put the baby to sleep on his back to further prevent any accidental suffocation.
