Baby Duvets and Crib Comforters

Duvets are a type of bed covering. They are typically filled with down or feathers or both. Duvets make the job of making a bed easier as they eliminate the use of sheets, blankets, quilts and other bed covers. Although the concept originated in Europe, where the cover was traditionally filled with Eider Duck, duvets have now become equally popular in other parts of the world.

Duvets are known by different names in other parts of the world - the Australians still prefer to call it a continental quilt. In the U.S., there is confusion over whether a duvet and a comforter are the same thing or not. It is argued that a duvet is only the cover while a comforter is the down blanket. Some believe that a duvet is used alone while a comforter goes on top of sheets and blankets. Regardless of how they are used on a bed, both baby duvets and down crib comforters are a viable options for providing the much needed warmth to your baby.

Over time, the filling that is used in duvets and/or comforters has undergone a significant change.  Silk, wool, polyester fiber and other synthetic materials are also used instead of the traditional fill of down or feathers. Today, given the range of fill options that are available, your choice of a crib comforter can make a lot of difference to your baby’s health.

Silk, wool and cotton are natural fibers and can also be produced, manufactured and processed using natural substances. The Green Movement stresses organically produced natural materials to make our planet a better place to live in. But the Green Movement also provides a healthy environment for our babies. Natural fibers and fabrics let air pass through them freely, do not carry allergens or cause skin rashes, and they are easy on the skin. A website for crib comforters and quilts that sells organic material will allow you to explore more benefits that organic bedding can provide.

Since the baby’s skin is so sensitive, you can never be sure of what can cause an allergic reaction to a newborn. Synthetic and chemically processed crib comforters or baby duvets can harm your baby as they give out a colorless poisonous gas. This gas is made by the oxidation of methanol known as formaldehyde. You would naturally want to protect your baby from anything that has the potential to harm your baby.

From the down of the Eider Duck to cotton, wool and silk to polyester, the journey of duvets has undergone a paradigm shift over time. What has not changed during this period is the need of parents to provide all that is within their capacity for the safety and growth of their baby.
